Brie Larson trains like a superhero and she knows how important it is to have some down time to relax and recover. Larson, 33, shared a series of Instagram pictures of herself wearing an orange swimsuit as she enjoyed time in the sauna. "Morning sweat session 101: must include selfies," she captioned the post. Larson says she rarely drinks alcohol, staying sober through all the pandemic lockdowns. "I have such a control issue, it's so hard for me to let go. I drink maybe once a year now. It's just like 'Jesus, like relax,'" she says. "For some people, even one or two drinks, that bit of disinhibition can cause them to take on behaviors that affect their health, from unhealthy food to illicit drugs to cigarettes," says Professor Kate Conigrave, a University of Sydney addiction medicine specialist. "So [curbing your alcohol] also helps you live the way you want to live."

Larson loves to eat giant, freshly-baked pretzels (although we're guessing this is when she isn't training for Captain Marvel). Indulging in the occasional treat is much better for overall health than being too restrictive, experts say. "You have not 'ruined' your day or your progress by choosing a treat," says Vivian Schemper RDN, LDN. "In fact, this approach aligns with the 80/20 rule of moderation and is much more sustainable. There is nothing unhealthy about this approach, and you can live a very healthy life by eating this way."

Larson enjoys regular sauna sessions, something experts believe may offer many health benefits. "Emerging evidence suggests that beyond its use for pleasure, sauna bathing may be linked to several health benefits, which include reduction in the risk of vascular diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and neurocognitive diseases; nonvascular conditions such as pulmonary diseases; mortality; as well as amelioration of conditions such as arthritis, headache, and flu," according to a review published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Larson says she likes to take small amounts of CBD to relax. "CBD can help lower cravings for tobacco and heroin under certain conditions, according to some research in humans," says  Peter Grinspoon, MD, who makes it clear the studies that exist are limited. "Animal models of addiction suggest it may also help lessen cravings for alcohol, cannabis, opiates, and stimulants."

Larson loves diving into new books when she has the time, and frequently asks her fans for new recommendations. "Interestingly, several studies indicate that reading works of fiction can be of particular benefit to people with or without mental health difficulties," says Rob Whitley, PhD. "These studies indicate that reading fiction can increase reader empathy, social skills, and inter-personal understandings (known as 'theory of mind')."
