BTS Review: global stars create history at Wembley Stadium

Publish date: 2024-07-15

‘UK was like big, big wall to me. but tonight, we and you guys just broke the wall.  BTS’ leader RM told Wembley Stadium last night on the first of two sold-out nights at the world-famous venue and never has a statement been truer for an artist.

Hot off the heels of their latest release Map of the Soul: Persona, which scored them their first ever UK #1, BTS took to the stage at Wembley Stadium last night (June 1st) playing to a crowd of 60,000. On a stage where the likes of The Rolling Stones, Queen and David Bowie have held concerts in the past, BTS created their own history as not only the first Korean artist to sell out the stadium. but the first Asian artist to do so.

The 2.5-hour long show was jam-packed with hits such as Not Today, IDOL, Fake Love and latest record-breaking single Boy With Luv, however, the bulk of the setlist comes from album B sides showcasing the passion that fans have for not just the popular songs but every aspect of BTS’ musical diversity. Fan favourite’s such as Outro: Wings and Make It Right provided the perfect sing along with the crowd

While the concert was an extension of the previous Love Yourself Tour that came to The O2 Arena last October, BTS aimed to adjust each performance as much as possible to give a whole refreshed vibe to the set. Each performance of the members solo track from the Love Yourself series was revamped, from Jungkook flying around Wembley to Suga’s glass box for Trivia: Seesaw, the show was adjusted to put on an even bigger performance the second time they came to the UK.

This review cannot go ahead without touching on the obvious point, BTS, a Korean group who sings primarily in Korean (give or take a few lines in their songs), playing to a sold out Wembley Stadium. The seven members looked in utter disbelief every time they stopped to speak to the crowd and how they have made it this far, but the proof was in the show. The passion they exude when performing, the quality of the music they write and produce and the undoubtedly strong connection they have with their fans, the mutual love, trust and support between them is just incredible. Just as they said in the final song of the night Mikrokosmos “you got me, I got you”  for as long as BTS is BTS, the ARMY will be ARMY.

The historic Wembley performance showcased seven men from Korea who dreamed of being performers and wanting to spread the messages that they do, breaking the barriers of pop music and cementing BTS as global artists.

Also, Jin recreating Freddie Mercury’s iconic ‘AY OH’ was the highlight of the night.
